Successful coral photography requires a good strobe so that you can really highlight the vibrant colours and rich textures of the corals living on a reef.

The true colour of the coral may not even be apparent to the naked eye underwater. It may not be until you light your coral subject with a flash or a strobe that the real hues and vibrant colours become apparent.

Featuring coral in your images (especially soft coral) can provide you with some of the most vibrant and colourful subjects for your underwater images.

A Wide-Angle lens is the perfect choice for shooting images of coral underwater. A wide-angle lens will allow you to get nice and close to your subject and still be able to fit a large subject in your frame whilst focusing on the small details.

Sunbursts work particularly well in coral shots. Coral makes a particularly good subject to practise your sunburst shots on, as it doesn’t tend to move around as much as fish or divers!

Successful reefscape photography requires really clear visibility to capture large areas of the underwater landscape without particles in the water causing backscatter or hazy images.

Capturing reefscape images is a great way to show non-divers the kind of images that divers most often see in their mind’s eye if they imagine first descending on a dive into beautiful clear waters.

The best reefscape images are often shot in shallow water, using natural light and manual white-balance. It is nice to include a diver or two to give a better sense of perspective.

Ko Haa provides consistently good visibility, pretty much, all year round and many of our best Reefscapes are capturered at Ko Haa – particularly in The Lagoon.

Wide-Angle images are the perfect shot-type choice for including the widest angle of view you can, on a sweeping Reefscape. It’sa chance to show of the expanse and size of the larger coral heads on any reef.

Underwater images with a black background are almost always eye-catching as the subject appears highlighted and isolated – seeming to ‘pop out’ at you.

Black background images are a very effective way to draw the viewer right into the main subject of your image. If your subject is colourful, a black background will really help to make the colours stand out.

A black background shot requires a fast shutter speed, small aperture and a well-angled external strobe to pick-out and light your subject. You’ll need to position yourself or your subject so there is nothing except clear water behind them. Paying good attention to your composition is crucial and positioning your subject well within the negative black space is worth experimenting with to capture a really striking image.

Cephalopod’s, especially Octopus, are masters of disguise and can quickly and constantly change the colour and texture of their skin to blend into their surroundings. Octopuses are able to squeeze into impossibly small cracks and crevices to evade predators, and one species in particular can mimic other creatures to fool predators into thinking they some other form of marine life!

All Cephalopods have clear blood which turns blue when in contact with air, and they have 3 hearts, one for each of their gills and the other for the rest of their body, pretty cool!

They make brilliant photography subjects, especially if you find one out hunting or nesting. Have look at our Basics of Composition article to give you some top tips and tricks to help you get some great shots next time you see one.

The best places to find them are at Ko Haa and Hin Daeng.
 

A classic sunburst shot features the sun as one of the main subjects in the photo. The sun can be positioned anywhere in the frame, or even partially out of the frame.

Sunburst shots work really well when you position a colourful subject in the foreground, but you’ll need to use a fairly powerful external strobe to counteract the intense light from the sun. If you don’t use a strobe you can still obtain a striking image, but your foreground subject will be silhouetted.

Sunbursts shots yield some of the most beautiful and breathtaking underwater images, however they are one of the most difficult shot types to master.

Nudibranches of all shapes and sizes can be found on each of Lantas Top Dive Sites. Their amazing patterns and colours can be a warning to predators that they are poisonous to eat, but it also makes them fantastic subjects for underwater macro enthusiasts.

The Manta Ray has the largest brain to body ratio of all sharks and rays on Earth. They can grow to over 7.5m in length and weigh as much as 2,000 kgs. Manta rays live to around 20 years old and are very close relative of the shark. Ironically, sharks as well as whales are their main predators. They are also closely related to the stingray but they don’t have a stinger.

The name Manta means blanket in Spanish, and the fact that this creature looks like a blanket as it moves in the water is part of the namesake. Manta rays are located throughout tropical waters of the world, typically around coral reefs which means that many visitors to these regions come wonder at these magnificent marine creatures.

Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are amongst the best dive sites in Thailand to spot Manta Rays.
